2021 Dodge Challenger Engine: Power, Torque, Gearbox, and Drivetrain

The 2021 Dodge Challenger remains to be a carryover model. The Challenger lineup offers you a number of engine options, ranging from a modest 303 HP V6  to an earth-shattering supercharged V8 which puts out up to 807 HP in the SRT Hellcat.

However, the Dodge Challenger SXT and the Dodge Challenger GT, both of which serve as the entry-level models to the Challenger lineup boasts a 3.6L V6 engine putting out 305 hp and 268 pound-feet of torque. 2021 Dodge Challenger Coupe Engine

The 2021 Dodge Challenger's 3.6L Naturally Aspirated V6 engine delivers power impressively.

This engine has a weak low-end but the mid-range feels significantly strong. It is not a fast-revving engine but the way it delivers power is really impressive. All the grunt is transferred to the rear wheels of this coupe by default until you opt-in for the optional AWD drivetrain that costs an additional $3000. That AWD unit of the Challenger is class-exclusive.

The Nissan 370z has the maximum power output in this league courtesy of a smart lightweight chassis and a 3.7L V6 engine. The Chevy Camaro is the least powerful with 275 ponies and 295-pound feet of torque.

2021 Dodge Challenger Acceleration: 0-60, Quarter Mile Time, and Top Speed

The Dodge Challenger is known for its breathtaking straight-line performance and setting drag strips on fire. However, such is not the case with the entry-level models of the Challenger (SXT and GT) that obtain their octane via a 3.6L naturally aspirated V6 mill. Being the SXT, the 2021 Dodge Challenger manages to hit 60 mph from a standstill in 5.3 seconds.

There is more than enough power on tap at all times and overtaking cars on the highway is a piece of cake for this muscle car. Keep the throttle pinned and the Challenger Coupe will hit the quarter-mile lap in 13.8 seconds. Flat out, the Challenger will hit a top speed of 156 mph. The exhaust note from the V6 is catchy but not as grumpy as it's V8 counterpart.

The gear shifts are seamless and efficient in the Challenger. However, all the contenders of this segment apart from the Challenger come with a manual gearbox, and being a muscle car, the manual makes more sense than the automatic transmission gearbox. Yet, here we are with the Challenger SXT that only offers an 8-speed automatic transmission setup.

The 370z and Challenger tie in the second spot. The quarter-mile is where the 370z sprints forward and beats the Challenger. The Chevy on the other hand is marginally slower than other cars of the lot hitting 60 mph in 5.4 seconds.

2021 Dodge Challenger Ride and Handling

The Challenger is a heavy car, the added weight helps the car stay stable to some extent. The weight of the engine up front is noticeable and the car feels a lot more willowy, perfect for straight lines but not for corners. The transmission is tuned very finely and helps the engine answer to every need according to your mood. Corners are not the Challenger's cup of tea. It has a considerable amount of body roll which makes it challenging to live by as a daily driver. But the Track Pack upgrades the suspension for a more planted ride. Pootling around town is never a concern thanks to how maneuverable the Challenger is.

2021 Dodge Challenger Coupe Handling

The 2021 Dodge Challenger is stable yet handling can get heavy at high speeds and sharp turns

The steering is on the heavier side which makes it fun on the track. It gives satisfactory feedback from the roads. Despite the huge dimensions, it's surprisingly easy to maneuver through tight spots. The various drive modes alter the pedal responsiveness thus changing the character of the vehicle. It has three distinctive modes like Default, Launch, and Sport modes.

2021 Dodge Challenger Performance Verdict

The Challenger is an attractive proposition for a petrolhead. It is the only genuine muscle car out there. A brawny engine, subtle looks, and the long nose- short deck design built for the straights. It's hard to give props to Dodge with the competitors offering a lot more in terms of technology. In a way that makes Dodge go for if you're into old-school stuff.
